Cob Oven

Building a Cob Oven; Welcoming a Community

It took a lot of mud, a pile of bricks and a heap of straw and the dedication and excitement of staff and volunteers – but the new wood-fired cob oven in the John Polanyi schoolyard garden went up without a hitch! An awesome addition to the garden, the cob oven has been going strong, baking up fresh veggie pizzas, kale chips and even a full on egg breakfast for the entire Toronto District School Board! As well, Mr. Essabhai’s business class at John Polanyi CI recently organized a farmers market and pizza lunch that is scheduled to take place every Friday in the garden.

Using natural and recycled materials to construct, garden manager Isabella enlisted in the help of student volunteers to build the cob oven from scratch! What an amazing job!
